A special session on crime has concluded with bills expanding methods of execution for the death penalty and allowing for constitutional carry in Louisiana heading to Gov. Jeff Landry's desk.
The Louisiana legislature on Thursday passed the bill authorizing the state to administer capital punishment through lethal injections, the gas chamber, and the electric chair.
While supporters note that the U.S. Supreme Court has approved all three methods, some faith leaders are calling labeling it inhumane.
A bill allowing Louisiana residents 18 or older without a felony to carry a handgun without a permit is also awaiting Landry's signature.
Democratic Gov. John Bel Edwards vetoed the proposal in 2021.
"Today, the good citizens of Louisiana who work hard and play by the rules will be able to pump their gas without fear. I appreciate the legislators who worked hard to pass these bills, as well as the victims of crime who had the courage to share their stories. Today is a great day for Louisiana," Landry said on Thursday.
