St. Tammany Parish's new coroner Dr. Christopher Tape says he has no intentions of stepping down.

It came to light in February that Tape faced six counts of child sexual assault in New Mexico more than 20 years ago. The case was dropped because prosecutors violated his right to a speedy trial by taking more than a year to charge him.

St. Tammany Parish state lawmakers want Tape to resign, calling him "unfit for office."

During Tape's first day in office Monday, he had a news conference in which he declared his innocence.
