State lawmakers are delaying action on a bill to establish specific areas where Louisianans can't carry concealed handguns.

Wednesday's discussion precedes the effective date of a new state law allowing concealed carry without a permit for people 18 and older.

If passed, House Bill 498 would create gun-free zones in New Orleans, including the French Quarter, the Downtown Development District, and the Convention Center.

City Council President Helena Moreno and NOPD Deputy Chief Nicholas Gernon testified in favor of the bill.
