A bill that bans the use of handheld cell phones while driving in Louisiana is on its way to the full House floor for debate.

Senate Bill 98 was sponsored by Senator Patrick McMath, a Republican from Covington.

The bill provides fines for using cell phones in a school zone or during a traffic stop. The fines would double if cell phone use results in an accident.

Opponents of the bill say drivers face distractions other than cell phones, including passengers.

The House Transportation Committee passed the bill unanimously on Monday.
