A former Lafourche Parish art teacher may face more than 100 years in prison after his conviction for sexually abusing a middle school student.

After a three-day trial, a jury found 64-year-old Ralph Cheramie Jr. guilty on Wednesday of molesting a juvenile, sexual battery of a victim under 13, and indecent behavior with a juvenile under 13.

The victim reported the sexual abuse in 2009 while Cheramie was working at a middle school, but nobody did anything about it.

When she became an adult, she went to the police herself.
