Hundreds of Louisiana doctors have signed a letter, urging state lawmakers not to classify the abortion pill as a controlled substance, which would lock up those who help women end their pregnancies.
The head of the New Orleans Health Department writes that the move could also delay life-saving treatment.
The letter states that mifepristone is safe and should not be in the same category as addictive drugs. That, the doctors claim, will result in "fear and confusion."
The author filed the bill after his pregnant sister's husband slipped abortion pills in her drink without her consent.
