If Louisiana cancels a major river diversion project in Plaquemines, it could cost the state almost $1 billion.

The Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority gave the news to the Senate Transportation Committee on Wednesday at the state Capitol.

They said the state has already spent $422 million on the Mid-Barataria Sediment Diversion, and could be liable for up to another $500 million because of contracts with construction firms and subcontractors.

A stop-work order from the Plaquemines Parish government has halted work on the $3 billion project.
