Louisiana is the first state in the nation to outlaw the retail sale of nitrous oxide.
Gov. Jeff Landry signed a bill into law on Tuesday that gives retailers until August 1 to remove the product from their shelves.
Until then, police agencies will develop plans to enforce the new ban on the potentially deadly product, commonly known as laughing gas.
The new law was passed with strong bipartisan support.
Nitrous oxide can still be used for dentistry, automotive applications, and other legitimate purposes.
