The sheriff of St. Martin Parish says cameras on the Atchafalaya Basin Bridge are no substitute for police officers.
Sheriff Becket Breaux recently testified before a Senate committee in favor of Senate Bill 379.
Gov. Jeff Landry signed the bill last month, which repealed a 2022 law that placed speed cameras on the basin bridge.
Breaux says cameras can't stop speeders, but can only mail them a ticket weeks later.
He says law enforcement presence on the bridge prevents bad driving and accidents before they happen.
