New Orleans city officials are bringing in a third-party accounting firm to help the Sewerage and Water Board with its billing system.

City Council on Thursday approved more than $3 million to hire an outside company to work with the utility's meter-reading team.

The expenditure is pending Mayor LaToya Cantrell's approval, and the Sewerage Board has 60 days to issue an official request for proposal.

Officials says the outside firm will spend at least a year overseeing the utility's billing system.
