The New Orleans Police Department's attempt to create a gun-free zone within the French Quarter may not pass legal muster.
The NOPD created a technical-vocational school at its substation on Royal Street, thus setting up a school with a thousand-foot radius where guns are excluded.
But Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill says state law doesn't work that way.
Sen. Blake Miguez of New Iberia wrote the permitless concealed carry law that takes effect on Thursday. He says gun-free zones don't keep people safe anyway.
