Landry Asks For Official Federal Disaster Declaration After Beryl

Gov. Jeff Landry is requesting a federal emergency disaster declaration for the sake of areas hit by tornadoes spun off from Hurricane Beryl.

Landry and Jacques Thibodeaux, director of the Governor's Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness, have both been in touch with FEMA.

Funds from the agency would reimburse parishes for debris removal, and for sheltering or evacuation costs associated with the storms.

The governor said he's optimistic that the request will be approved.

“We want to ensure we seek all levels of support for the parishes that continue to recover from this devastating tornado outbreak," said Landry.

He added, “Our office will continue to work with our local, state, and federal partners to ensure those hard-hit parishes are able to have a full recovery.”

The National Weather Service has confirmed five tornadoes touched down in Louisiana as a result of Beryl.
