Mortgage lenders in Louisiana are trying to figure out how to make homebuying more affordable in the state.

Rising interest rates are a problem, but the state's insurance crisis is largely responsible for a sharp drop in home sales over the past two years.

Federal Housing Administration loans can provide homebuyers varying amounts of assistance. The state bond program allows for down payment assistance based on of a percentage of the sales price of the home.

Some programs are tailored for particular neighborhoods in Louisiana.
