The St. Tammany Parish animal shelter is taking to social media to urge pet adoptions as a means of relieving its severe overcrowding.

A Facebook post on Monday showed the facility's crowded cages.

The shelter was designed to accommodate 120 dogs and 90 cats, but as of Tuesday morning it held 241 dogs and 129 cats.

Shelter director Robert Bremer says the Facebook message brought in a number of people who adopted pets, but more help is needed in order for the shelter to avoid putting some of the animals down.
