New Orleans city officials are considering the possibility of using the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center as a temporary hurricane shelter.

The idea is to set up a "refuge of last resort" for people who can't evacuate because they're elderly or have medical problems.

It's the first time in nearly 20 years that the Convention Center is under consideration as a shelter. New Orleans Recreation Department locations are also being discussed.

The locations are meant to house no more than 5,000 people on a short-term basis.
