The tropics remain active as we navigate the peak of hurricane season.
While there is no immediate threat to Louisiana at this time, forecasters at the National Hurricane Center have highlighted an area in the western Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico for possible development.
"A large and disorganized area of low pressure located over the western and southwestern Caribbean Sea is producing some shower and thunderstorm activity. Environmental conditions could become conducive for gradual development, and a tropical depression could form in a few days while the system is over the southern Gulf of Mexico or northwestern Caribbean Sea," said the NHC Monday morning. "While interests in the northwestern Caribbean Sea and along the U.S. Gulf Coast should continue to monitor the progress of this system, the timetable for potential development has shifted later toward late week or this weekend."
It's also expected the next tropical depression of the season will form soon in the eastern Tropical Atlantic. The next names on the 2024 list are Leslie and Milton.
Of the currently named storms, Tropical Storm Kirk is expected to become the season's next major hurricane, possibly reaching category 3 status. However, the storm is not expected to threaten land.
The 2024 Atlantic hurricane season ends November 30.
