The Central Fire Station in Olde Towne Slidell will soon feature a community baby box, providing a safe, anonymous option for parents to surrender newborns.

The secure, temperature-controlled device will be installed at the station, allowing parents to safely give up custody under Louisiana's Safe Haven Law.

St. Tammany Fire Chief Chris Kauffmann says the box is a critical resource, though they hope it will never be used.

The project was inspired by past tragedies, and organizers have raised ten percent of the $22,000 needed to install it by year's end.
