The New Orleans Police Department is working to exit the federal consent decree after 12 years of oversight.

During a virtual meeting on Tuesday, independent monitors outlined the steps NOPD must take to prove its reforms can be sustained over the long term.

The consent decree, originally implemented to address police brutality and corruption, requires the department to show it can maintain these improvements.

Public meetings will continue throughout the process, with feedback being considered by Federal Judge Susie Morgan before a final decision is made.
