Officials with University Medical Center in New Orleans say a one-day nurses' strike coming up on Friday won't interrupt patient care.

The nurses at UMC voted to unionize last year, the first at any private-sector Louisiana hospital to organize.

On Monday, they announced the upcoming strike. At issue are workplace safety, staffing, pay, and benefits.

“We are striking because we see our patients being short-changed everyday in our hospital by management’s decisions,” said Hailey Dupre, a registered nurse in the endoscopy unit.

The hospital issued a statement on Monday afternoon expressing disappointment in the decision to strike.
