Officials say Louisiana set a new record for the first day of early voting.

The Louisiana Secretary of State's office says nearly 177,000 voters cast their ballots on Friday, up slightly more than one percent from the almost 175,000 votes cast in 2020, when officials took measures to deal with the pandemic.

Early voting in Louisiana this year ends on October 29.

Ever since the state initiated early voting in 2008, turnout has tended to heavily favor Democrats, but Friday's results gave the GOP the edge.
