Demolition Begins In 9th Ward Of Homes Built On Toxic Former Landfill Site

Demolition is underway of some homes in the 9th Ward's contaminated Gordon Plaza.

The homes were built on an old landfill, and families who lived there started being sickened in the early 1990s.

City, state and federal officials worked together to move dozens of families out of the area into their choice of new homes.

On Wednesday, there was a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the start of construction on a solar farm where the homes are being torn down.
