Archbishop Gregory Aymond of the Archdiocese of New Orleans will submit his resignation to Pope Francis today.
Canon law requires an archbishop to resign on his 75th birthday, which is today for Aymond. The pope will either accept Aymond's resignation or ask him to stay on as the archbishop of New Orleans.
The archdiocese is in the middle of Chapter 11 bankruptcy proceedings because of hundreds of sexual abuse cases.
Aymond is the first New Orleans resident to become the local archbishop.
