The Department of Justice is suing the State of Louisiana and the Louisiana Department of Public Safety and Corrections.

The lawsuit claims that many Louisiana inmates are kept locked up for weeks or months after their release date.

Justice officials say the lawsuit follows an investigation by the civil rights division and by U.S. Attorneys' Offices in the state.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry and Louisiana State Attorney General Liz Murrill both claim the lawsuit is a baseless action by the lame-duck Biden administration.
