Officials in St. James and St. John parishes have outlined their traffic plans for Christmas Eve bonfires.

The St. John Parish Sheriff's Office will put a one-way traffic flow in Garyville from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. Traffic heading westbound on LA 44 (River Road) will flow in one direction from Church St. to LA 54. Eastbound traffic on LA 44 will be redirected north to LA 54 towards Airline Highway.

The St. James Parish Sheriff's Office says their plan will be in effect from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m.

Traffic on LA 44 will be two-way traffic, with all highways between LA 642 and LA 3213 that lead to River Road allowed for a right-turn only. No left turns will be allowed on any highway between LA 642 and LA 3213. Drivers will not be allowed to turn onto LA 44 from streets in Gramercy and Lutcher.

Bonfires in both parishes will be lit no earlier than 7 p.m.

German and French immigrants brought the bonfires to South Louisiana in the 1700s to light the way for Papa Noel.
