Louisiana health officials are announcing the nation's first human death due to the bird flu.

The patient was hospitalized with H5N1 after being exposed to a combination of wild birds and a non-commercial backyard flock.

Officials haven't released the identity of the patient, who was over age 65 and reportedly had underlying medical conditions.

So far there's no evidence of person-to-person transmission of the disease, and the patient is still the only human case of the bird flu in Louisiana.
