The University of New Orleans is turning to furloughs to help deal with a budget deficit.

The University of Louisiana System Board of Supervisors approved a plan on Thursday that requires nearly every employee making more than $30,000 a year to take unpaid time off during each two-week pay period.

The furloughs involve 290 of the university's 575 full-time employees, and will continue until the end of the fiscal year on June 30. They're expected to save the university $1.7 million.
