Students and teachers in Ascension Parish can't be punished for refusing to use a student's preferred pronouns or name.

The parish school board approved the new policy by a unanimous 10-0 vote at Tuesday's monthly meeting.

The new policy is in keeping with an amendment to the state's Diversity, Equity and Inclusion policy for public schools that the legislature passed last June.

The amendment takes effect on February 1.
