The Louisiana Board of Regents recommends moving the University of New Orleans back into the LSU System.
The state's higher education oversight board made the recommendation unanimously on Wednesday in response to UNO's severe budget crisis.
The school is resorting to a spending freeze and layoffs to deal with a $10 million budget gap and declining enrollment.
Moving UNO back into the LSU system would require the approval of the legislature, as well as the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools.
