The Kenner Police Department is taking steps to work closely with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.
The police force recently joined a federal initiative called the 287(g) program, which authorizes state and local police to perform particular immigration enforcement duties.
The move is in response to President Donald Trump's call to crack down on illegal immigrants.
The program will allow Kenner officers to investigate the immigration status of people who have been arrested or detained for criminal activity.
