New car dealerships in the New Orleans area are reporting a surge in sales as buyers move to beat price hikes resulting from upcoming tariffs.

Nationwide auto sales reached about 1.6 million vehicles last month, up nearly 14 percent from March of last year.

Some local dealers say the tariffs could come and go in a hurry, since international negotiations treat them as bargaining chips.

President Donald Trump announced a new round of tariffs on Wednesday.

Stocks plummeted on Wall Street Thursday.
