The City Council will get an update today about the status of backlogged Orleans Parish sexual assault kits awaiting genetic testing.
Orleans Parish District Attorney Jason Williams, the New Orleans Police Department, and the Louisiana State Police will present the latest data.
So far, 914 of a thousand kits have been processed by outsourced labs. After the NOPD's own crime lab opens at the end of 2026, the city will be able process its own kits.
Until that time, it's mostly the job of the Louisiana State Police Crime Lab.
