The Louisiana legislature is considering a bill to increase the state's homestead exemption from $75,000 to $125,000.
State Representative Matt Willard, a New Orleans Democrat, authored the bill, which the House Ways & Means Committee passed on Tuesday with a 9-5 vote.
The bill gives parishes the option of raising the homestead exemption or not.
The bill is a proposed constitutional amendment, so if the legislature passes it, Louisiana voters will see it on the ballot this fall.
