The questions surrounding who would start at quarterback for the New Orleans Saints in 2025 took an unexpected turn Saturday with Derek Carr announcing his decision to retire from the NFL.
Carr's status was in doubt following the reveal of shoulder issues. The Saints said Carr had pain in his right shoulder while beginning preparations for the season in late March. Scans found a labral tear and significant degenerative changes to his rotator cuff.
After considering surgery, Carr decided to retire instead.
"Upon reflection of prayer, and in discussion with Heather, I've decided to retire from the National Football League," said Carr in a statement released by the team. "For more than 11 years, we have been incredibly blessed, and we are forever grateful and humbled by this experience. It's difficult to find the right words to express our thanks to all the teammates, coaches, management, ownership, team officials and especially the fans who made this journey so special. Your unwavering support has meant the world to us."
The Saints head into the season with second-round pick Tyler Shough, along with returning second-year player Spencer Rattler and third-year pro Jake Haener as options at quarterback.
