New Orleans city leaders and state lawmakers say a nonprofit involved in homeless relief efforts may have some explaining to do.

A recent state legislative audit showed the city and the nonprofit UNITY of Greater New Orleans spent more than $216 million in taxpayer money on homeless initiatives between 2019 and 2024.

Auditors tried to measure UNITY's performance, but said the nonprofit was uncooperative.

The Department of Housing and Urban Development says the homeless population in Orleans and Jefferson Parishes is up nearly 20 percent since 2022.
