The Japanese company Denka is halting production at its rubber plant in St. John the Baptist Parish.

The facility in LaPlace has produced chloroprene rubber since 2014. Denka's American subsidiary bought it from DuPont the following year.

The plant had 250 employees as of December, but the company says it had been shut down for maintenance prior to Tuesday's decision not to resume production.

Denka says the plant lost $109 million during the fiscal year that ended March 31.
