A bill to make Louisiana's insurance commissioner an appointee instead of an elected official has the approval of a Senate committee.

The Senate Governmental Affairs Committee gave the bill the green light on Wednesday.

The bill would allow the governor to appoint the commissioner from a list of candidates submitted by a nominating committee. At present, voters elect the insurance commissioner.

Supporters of the bill say 39 other states have an appointed commissioner, along with lower car and home insurance rates.
