The state legislature is considering a bill that would allow the New Orleans City Council to increase the occupancy tax on short-term rentals.

The House Municipal, Parochial and Cultural Affairs Committee discussed the matter on Thursday. The bill calls for increasing the tax by more than three percent, but no more than ten percent.

The committee advanced the bill to the House floor for full consideration.

Even if the legislature enacts the bill into law, it would be up to the New Orleans City Council to increase the tax.
