The sheriff of Tangipahoa Parish says he's going to give local residents another chance to provide his deputies with a pay raise.

Sheriff Gerald Sticker says he plans to place a sales tax measure before the voters again later this year or early next year.

Voters rejected a proposed sales tax increase in March.

Sticker said the jail staff is short-handed several officers, and he's looking for his third jail warden in less than a year. The previous two were let go after a series of escapes and a flow of contraband into the jail.

Sticker says a pay increase would help him recruit and retain a jail warden and other officers.
