A study from the Cicero Institute says Louisiana may be short nearly 5,000 doctors by 2030.
The shortage will affect almost every parish in the state, with rural communities likely to be hardest hit.
Dr. Paul Berggreen, president of the American Independent Medical Practice Association, says Louisiana graduates nearly 200 medical students a year, and about half of them stay in the state for their training and to set up a practice.
He says there are scholarships for students who plan to stay in Louisiana to practice medicine.
