The New Orleans City Council is moving ahead with a plan to pay off nearly $90 million owed to plaintiffs who successfully sued the city.

Council members voted on Thursday to authorize the issuance of tax revenue bonds to clear up the backlog of settlements. Some of the payments have been pending for many years.

The City Council had been working in recent years to allocate the money to pay off the judgments, and council members decided the bonds are the fastest way to take care of the matter.
