The Louisiana Department of Health is confirming the year's first human case of West Nile virus in Orleans Parish.
The patient reportedly has the neuroinvasive form of the disease, which can have severe symptoms.
In the New Orleans area, the main carrier of the virus is the southern house mosquito, which is most active at night.
Mosquito control officials advise residents to limit outdoor activities after dark, use bug spray, and keep window and door screens in good shape.
