An audit reveals that Louisiana has paid millions in Medicaid benefits to dead people.

Between 2019 and 2025, the state paid $9.6 million to more than a thousand people who had died.

The Louisiana Legislative Auditor's Office made the discovery by cross-referencing the Social Security database.

State and federal Medicaid funds flow through third-party managed care organizations. For six years, they paid benefits to deceased people.

The state Department of Health has recovered $4 million of the misspent funds.
