Jefferson Parish school district leaders say they've made progress in reducing teacher vacancies.
The district is still recovering from a spike in teacher vacancies during the pandemic.
A year ago the school system reported 150 open teaching positions. As of Monday, the first day of the school year, the number had dropped to 70, which is about one teacher vacancy for each school in the district.
Officials say recruitment efforts have helped, along with the district's in-house certification program called Grow Your Own.
