State agriculture officials are doing what they can to keep boll weevils from returning to Louisiana.

Cotton harvest machinery must be properly inspected before being brought into the state.

The Louisiana Department of Agriculture and Forestry says boll weevils can cross state lines from infested areas on board cotton harvest equipment that hasn't been fumigated.

The invasive pest first turned up in Louisiana in 1903, and caused untold amounts of damage to cotton crops before it was eradicated statewide in 2012.
