Starting next year, Louisiana SNAP recipients will no longer be allowed to use their benefits to buy candy, sodas, or energy drinks.
Gov. Jeff Landry on Tuesday announced the state's new federal waiver banning such purchases.
Landry thanked President Donald Trump and Secretary of Agriculture Brooke Rollins for approving the change.
Prior to the waiver, SNAP recipients could buy most grocery items besides alcohol, tobacco, personal care products, and hot prepared foods.
The waiver allows the purchase of rotisserie chicken.
