Demolition work is finally underway on a storm-damaged school in Lafitte.

On Tuesday, heavy machinery started knocking down Fisher Middle-High School, which has been vacant since Hurricane Ida wrecked it in 2021.

Since that time, its students have attended a temporary campus in Marrero.

There's no timeline for rebuilding the school, but FEMA is providing $68 millionfor the project, or about 90 percent of the cost.

Jefferson Parish Schools will pick up the rest.
