New Orleans Mayor LaToya Cantrell has pleaded not guilty to federal charges of wire fraud and corruption.

Cantrell is accused of using criminal means to cover up a romantic relationship with a city police officer assigned to protect her. She has repeatedly denied wrongdoing, describing her relationship as professional.

This is the first time in the city's history that a sitting mayor is facing criminal prosecution.

A judge ordered her to forfeit her passport as conditions of her plea.

Cantrell's attorney refused to make a comment as they walked into the federal courthouse.
