The Slidell City Council is taking steps toward buying the derelict North Shore Square Mall, and not everybody is crazy about the idea.

In Tuesday's meeting, residents opposed the council's plan to raise sales taxes around the mall by one percent to pay for the purchase.

Council president Nick DiSanti stated that an appraisal of the mall has been finished but not released. That news took other council members by surprise and heightened residents' transparency concerns.

DiSanti says buying the mall would cost a bit more than $12 million.
