Election officials are reporting strong turnout at early voting locations across Orleans Parish.

Saturday was the first day of early voting.

Officials say early participation is likely being driven by high-profile races for mayor and sheriff.

The top candidates for mayor are City Council Vice President Helena Moreno, State Senator Royce Duplessis, and City Councilman Oliver Thomas.

The leading candidates for sheriff are the incumbent Susan Hutson, former interim NOPD superintendent Michelle Woodfork, and Edwin Shorty Jr., constable of Second City Court.

Early voting continues today through this coming Saturday.
