State health officials are confirming a surge in West Nile virus in Louisiana this year.
The Louisiana Department of Health reported nearly 1,100 mosquito samples have tested positive for the virus statewide in 2025.
West Nile virus is transmitted to humans by infected mosquitoes, who catch it from birds.
The disease is a seasonal epidemic in North America, where it usually flares up in summer and continues into the fall.
Most people who are infected with West Nile won't develop symptoms.
